Privacy Policy
Last updated: 8 March 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how ScanMScaneMeyFood ("we", "us", or "our") collects, uses, and protects information when you use our website and barcode scanning service at scan-me.site ("the Service"). By using the Service, you agree to the practices described in this policy.
1. Information We Collect
We do not require you to create an account or provide any personal information to use ScaneMe. However, the following data is collected automatically when you use the Service:
a) Anonymous Scan Events
When you scan a barcode, we log the following data anonymously to our database:
- The barcode number scanned
- The product category detected (food, beauty, pet food, supplement, or cleaning)
- Whether the product was found in our database
- A timestamp of when the scan occurred
This data is never linked to any user, device identifier, IP address, or personal identity. It is used solely to improve the service and understand which products are most frequently scanned.
b) Product Cache
To improve performance, product information returned from third-party databases is cached in our database against the barcode number. This cache contains only product data (name, ingredients, nutrition) — no user information.
c) Camera Access
The scanner feature requests access to your device camera solely to read barcodes. We do not record, store, transmit, or process any camera images or video. All barcode detection happens locally on your device in real time.
d) Standard Web Server Logs
Like all websites, our hosting provider (Vercel) may collect standard server log data including IP addresses, browser type, and pages visited. This is handled by Vercel under their own privacy policy and is not accessible to or used by us for tracking purposes.
2. Cookies and Tracking
ScaneMe itself does not set any first-party cookies or use any tracking technologies.
However, we use Google AdSense to display advertisements. Google AdSense may use cookies and similar technologies to serve personalised ads based on your browsing history. This is governed by Google's Privacy Policy and their advertising policies. You can opt out of personalised advertising at adssettings.google.com.
We use Supabase as our database provider. Supabase may process anonymised scan event data described above. Supabase is GDPR-compliant and their data processing terms apply.
3. How We Use Your Data
The anonymous scan data we collect is used to:
- Understand which products and categories are most frequently scanned
- Improve the product database and detection accuracy
- Display aggregate statistics on our homepage (e.g. total scans)
- Monitor service performance and reliability
We do not sell, rent, or share any data with third parties for marketing purposes. We do not build user profiles. We do not use scan data for advertising targeting.
4. Third-Party Data Sources
Product information is retrieved from the following open-source, community-maintained databases:
- Open Food Facts — food and drink products
- Open Beauty Facts — cosmetics and personal care
- Open Pet Food Facts — pet food and treats
- Open Products Facts — supplements and household products
These databases are licensed under the Open Database Licence (ODbL). We do not control the accuracy of data in these databases. Product information should not be used as a substitute for professional medical, veterinary, or dietary advice.
5. Data Retention
Anonymous scan events are retained indefinitely for aggregate analytics purposes. Product cache entries are refreshed after 7 days. Since no personal data is stored, there is no personal data to delete.
If you believe any data related to you has been stored and wish to request deletion, please contact us at the address below and we will investigate and respond within 30 days.
6. Children's Privacy
ScaneMe is a general-purpose product information tool and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. Since we collect no personal information from any user, this applies equally to all age groups.
7. Your Rights (GDPR / UK GDPR)
If you are located in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, you have the following rights under GDPR / UK GDPR:
- Right to access — request a copy of data held about you
- Right to erasure — request deletion of your personal data
- Right to object — object to processing of your data
- Right to restrict processing — request we limit how we use your data
As we collect no personally identifiable information, exercising most of these rights will confirm that no personal data is held. To make a request, contact us at the email below.
8. Security
We use Supabase with Row Level Security (RLS) enabled on all database tables. All data is transmitted over HTTPS. As no personal data is collected, the risk of a data breach affecting users is minimal.
9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
